This home is located on a breathtaking site in between a heavily wooded oak forest and the ocean sound. Working largely within the existing footprint of the original homestead built in 1980 we were able to accentuate the portion of the home the clients loved while, adding new spaces and reworking the original design to provide ample space for their large family, the owners passion for boating and outdoor living.
A new materials pallet of weathered wood siding and stainted brick are inspired by the local eastern North Carolina coastal vernacular. The use of these native materials help the home blend into the neighboring oak forest that you must meander through upon entering the site.
An entry porch of slatted wood pays homage to the tradition of entry porches and slatted wood shutters found throughout the local town.
Large sliding doors with screen doors were added to the majority of bedrooms allowing for easy flow for outdoor living with multiple entry points, all while maximizing views and natural ventilation.
The communal living spaces within the house were reorganized and expanded. A generous living room with floor to ceiling views towards the ocean now sits within an exposed structure gabled volume while the relocated kitchen with a generous island, provides the space to entertain.
